Submitted by Emeraude Hunter for MNHSAA
MANITOUWAGE, ON – Saturday, May 28th students and staff facilitators from the Manitouwadge High School Athletic Association (MNHSAA) hosted a sports clinic open to students in Grades 4-8 from all three local elementary schools. The clinic, a full day of learning, taught basic basketball and volleyball skills.
Elementary students were welcomed to the gym at 10 am Saturday morning by the high school athletes and coach Wayne Pittman beginning a day to build a great foundation for their future participation in Wolverines sports.
The clinic started with basketball drills to learn vital skills like ball handling and teamwork. After learning the basics through group activities and one-on-one learning, the high school athletes joined the future Wolverines for a fun scrimmage to finish off the basketball portion of the clinic. A delicious and healthy homemade lunch was provided for a break between sports.
Following the well-earned lunch break, it was time for volleyball! The participants learnt important skills like serving, passing and hitting through more fun drills and demonstrations. The young athletes also learned some basics of rotations and rules of the game before a final scrimmage to end
off their volleyball lessons as well as the clinic.
Overall the clinic was a great learning experience for the participants giving them a head start for high school sports while providing a wonderful leadership opportunity for the high school students who led the clinics. Funds raised from the event go towards the Manitouwadge High School Athletic Association continuing to host sports days, special events and keep sports equipment updated and maintained.
