Snowmobiler Located Deceased: Sled Went Through Ice

TEMAGAMI, ON – The Temiskaming Detachment of the Ontario Provincial Police (OPP) have located a deceased person after responding to a Motorized Snow Vehicle (MSV) collision near Bell Island in the Municipality of Temagami earlier today.

Further investigation revealed that the snowmobiler had gone out the previous evening and had not returned home. 

The OPP Snowmobile, ATV and Vessel Enforcement (SAVE) team, the Underwater Search and Rescue Unit (USRU), the Temagami Fire Department, and the Nipissing District Emergency Medical Service responded to the call while the Remotely Piloted Aircraft System (RPAS) was flown over the area. 

An OPP officer and a member of the Temagami Fire Department embarked in a vessel to retrieve the body from the lake, while the ground crew was assisting in pulling them to shore. The body of the deceased was recovered and has been identified as Thomas EVANS, 71-years-old of Temagami.

The Office of the Chief Coroner- Ontario Forensic Pathology Service (OCC-FPS) is assisting with this investigation. A post-mortem examination is scheduled for December 16, 2021 in Sudbury, to determine the cause of death.
