“Booster Shots” in TBDHU

Third Doses of COVID-19 Vaccines to Most Vulnerable Populations

THUNDER BAY, ON – On Tuesday August 17, 2021 the Province announced that third doses of the COVID-19  vaccine will be offered to specific high-risk groups. These include: 

  • Transplant recipients (including solid organ transplant and hematopoietic stem cell  transplants);  
  • Patients with hematological cancers (examples include lymphoma, myeloma, leukemia)  on active treatment (chemotherapy, targeted therapies, immunotherapy);
  • Recipients of an anti-CD20 agent (e.g. rituximab, ocrelizumab, ofatumumab); and
  • Residents of high-risk congregate settings including long-term care homes, higher-risk  licensed retirement homes and First Nations elder care lodges. 

The Thunder Bay District Health Unit (TBDHU) is actively planning for the administration of  third doses to those that are eligible, including working with long-term care to provide doses to  residents. Third doses will not be provided at the CLE Coliseum clinic or local  pharmacies at this time. Further details on third doses will be provided shortly.  

In addition, the province has extended eligibility to include all children born in 2009. Beginning Wednesday, August 18, 2021, all children turning 12 years old before the end of 2021 are eligible to receive their first dose of Pfizer vaccine. Eligible individuals can book appointments online or by calling 1-833-943-3900. Walk-in appointment spots are also available at the  TBDHU CLE Coliseum clinic in Thunder Bay.
