MARATHON, ON – The letter quoted below has been issued to parents from the SGDSB Director of Education.
In her letter, SGDSB Director of Education Nicole Morder-Cormier reminds everyone of the travel advisory and lockdown for Northwestern Ontario while also advising that students will be transferring to remote learning for the week following Easter Weekend:
The Board will be shifting to a remote learning model for the week from April 6 to 9, 2021 while schools remain closed for this period.
March 31, 2021
Dear Parent/Guardian:We are writing to notify you of a decision made regarding moving to remote learning for the days of April 6-9.
Over the past few weeks we have seen an increase in Covid-19 cases across the region and we continue to monitor carefully. The Easter holiday is a time where families gather and often travel to congregate.
This increases the risk of individuals and can impact the health and safety of staff and students. This will also have an impact on our ability to safely staff schools. As you are already aware we have had outbreaks in several of our schools to date. It is our responsibility to protect the health and safety of everyone as we make changes during this difficult time.
The Board will be shifting to a remote learning model for the week from April 6 to 9, 2021 while schools remain closed for this period. Please check our Board website/social media.
The Board understands that remote learning following Easter will have an impact on families’ planning, which is why the Board is providing notice to you today. Students with special needs will be supported during the shift to remote learning. We have reached out to the Thunder Bay District Health Unit and they have provided their support in moving to a remote learning model for the four days mentioned.
We would also like to remind all families that our current travel advisory remains in place for any travel outside of Northern Ontario. Students who travel outside the Northwestern Ontario region are not permitted to attend school properties until 14 days post return and must be asymptomatic. The Northwestern Ontario region is defined as White River to the Manitoba border.
We are aware of the sacrifices parents have made and continue to make for their children. The Board’s staff will continue to take steps to proactively manage a smooth and safe transition back to school on April 19,2021. Thank you in advance for your continued support as we continue to navigate safety during these difficult times. We will continue to provide further updates should there be any changes. We hope that everyone has a safe and happy Easter break.
If you have any comments or questions, please contact your school principal.
