Marathon By-Law to Enforce Social Distancing
MARATHON, ON – The Town of Marathon remains diligent in monitoring the situation as it pertains to COVID-19. We continue to evaluate all Public Health Agency communications as well as communications from other Federal and Provincial Government Health Authorities. The health and well-being of our residents is of great importance.
The Emergency Control Group and Marathon Town Council met on April 6th , and at a Special Meeting of Council has passed a new by-law that prohibits certain activities, regulates physical distancing, and defines the maximum allowable number of persons in a business. This enhanced bylaw enforcement is intended to help combat COVID-19. Individuals not adhering to the new by-law regulations can be fined for each offence committed.
Municipal regulations in the by-law include:
- Prohibiting people from maintaining less than a 2.0 metre distance from one another on any public property (other than people they live with) in Marathon;
- Prohibiting businesses to permit people to be seated or to be standing less than 2.0 metres apart;
- Prohibiting people from using any Town of Marathon indoor and outdoor facilities;
- Limiting the number of people allowed inside operating businesses based on store size.
“The health and well-being of Marathon residents continues to be our number one priority. The Town will continue to enact any measures necessary to keep our community safe. I implore all residents to adhere to the Marathon COVID-19 Emergency Measures By-law, and maintain proper physical distancing at all times.”
Mayor Rick Dumas.
“Through enforcement, the Marathon COVID-19 Emergency Measures By-law will allow municipal staff to educate and promote physical distancing across our community. Enhanced enforcement is a required measure that is necessary to protect the health and well-being of our staff and residents.”
Daryl Skworchinski, Chief Administrative Officer/Clerk.
