Community Sessions: Concussion Diagnosis & Treatment
Volunteer for a sports team? Coach athletes or supervise kids on the schoolyard or in the gym? If so, this is the event for you.
The Northern Ontario School of Medicine (NOSM) is hosting Concussions – Diagnosis and treatment: What You Need to Know. Medical experts in Concussion management will present on best-practices in preventing a concussion, recognizing the signs, and ensuring a safe return to school and sport following a concussion.
This educational event is for coaches, teachers, parents, and athletes in all sport that may carry a risk of head injury and is intended to support prevention and identification of concussion in recreational sport or at play. The event will also provide guidance and resources related to return to school and sport following a head injury. We hope that coaches will incorporate this education as a team practice activity and attend together.
This event is open to the public however, please note that space is limited and seating will be available on a first come – first served basis.

In 2017, Ontario passed concussion safety legislation, known as Rowan’s Law, establishing mandatory requirements for organizations and coaches, with an aim to make sport safer on the field, court, mats, or playground.
The Concussions – Diagnosis and treatment: What you need to know educational material has been developed by NOSM clinical faculty from Thunder Bay and Sudbury, including Drs. David McKee, Tara Baldisera, Jairus Quesnele and Deborah Smith, and nurse practitioner Shannon Kenrick-Rochon.
Endorsed by the Lakehead Public School Board, the Thunder Bay Catholic District School Board and Lakehead University, the Thunder Bay event will be hosted in the Cafetorium at Superior C.V.I. where athletes will also share their personal stories and experiences with concussion.
