Two Traffic Stops End in Cannabis Related Charges for Drivers
WHITE RIVER, ON – Saturday December 29, 2018, at approximately 12:40 p.m., members of the Ontario Provincial Police (OPP) Superior East Detachment performed a traffic stop on Highway 17 in White River Township. While speaking to the driver, an odour of cannabis was detected emanating from the vehicle.
As a result of the investigation, a small amount of dried cannabis was seized and a male [Edited by ONN], 21 years of age, of Quesnel, British Columbia was charged with the following;
- Drive vehicle or boat with cannabis readily available, contrary to section 12(1) of the Cannabis Control Act (CCA).
Tuesday January 1, 2019, at approximately 6:10 p.m., a member of the OPP in White River performed a traffic stop on a vehicle for failing to move over. While speaking with the driver, the officer detected an odour of cannabis coming from inside the vehicle.
As a result of the investigation, a small amount of cannabis was located and seized. A male [Edited by ONN], 27 years of age, of Etobicoke, Ontario was charged with the following;
- Drive vehicle or boat with cannabis readily available, contrary to section 12(1) of the CCA,
- Class G1 licence holder – unaccompanied by qualified driver, contrary to section 5(1) of O.Reg 340/94 of the Highway Traffic Act (HTA).
The OPP would like to remind the public that although cannabis is now legal to possess and consume, it is not legal to have cannabis in a vehicle or boat unless one or both of the following conditions are met;
- Cannabis is in its original packaging and has not been opened; OR
- Cannabis is packed in baggage that is fastened closed or is not otherwise readily available to any person in the vehicle or boat.
