TBDHU Cancels District Flu Clinics
In preparation for the possibility of a labour disruption, the Thunder Bay District Health Unit (TBDHU) has initiated contingency planning for its programs and services. As a result of this planning, we regret that we will not be holding flu clinics in our District communities.
This decision has been made due to the advanced preparations and commitments that are required for these clinics, and the TBDHU’s inability at the time of planning to confirm the availability of nursing resources necessary to run the clinics.
Flu is a serious illness and flu shots are the body’s best defense against catching and spreading the flu virus. Individuals can still conveniently access the flu shot at many locations, including clinics, pharmacies, and emergency medical services. Pharmacies can give the flu shot to anyone over the age of 5. Individuals 6 months and older can be immunized at their health care provider (i.e. physician or nurse practitioner). Contact your local pharmacy or health care provider for details. Before planning to get a flu shot, it’s important to remember that an Ontario health card is required by pharmacies and health care providers.
The health and well-being of our clients is our top priority and we apologize for any inconvenience this may cause our clients and residents of Thunder Bay District.
The TBDHU is currently working with its public health nurses (members of the Ontario Nurses’ Association – ONA) to negotiate a collective agreement. While the TBDHU is optimistic that an amicable agreement will be reached on October 15 during mediation with ONA, if this does not take place, a labour disruption is a possibility. This disruption could occur as early as Tuesday, October 16.
