Stolen Vehicle from Alberta Intercepted Near Hearst
HEARST, ON – On August 10, 2018, at approximately 6:00 p.m., members of the James Bay Detachments (Hearst office) of the Ontario Provincial Police (OPP) were advised of a theft of gas in Beardmore, Ontario. The suspects were travelling east bound on Highway 11 towards the Town of Hearst in a stolen truck from Sherwood Park, Alberta.
The vehicle was observed by members of the OPP in Hearst who attempted a stop. The driver fled from police and the vehicle was located approximately 30 kilometres north of Hornepayne, Ontario.
Highway 631 at Highway 11 down to Hornepayne, Ontario was closed for several hours while police conducted the investigation and has since reopened.
The OPP Canine Unit and Emergency Response Team (ERT) located and arrested a male and a female.
An [Edited by ONN] 18 year old, from Waldeck, Saskatchewan has been charged with the following offences:
- Two counts of Dangerous Operation of Motor Vehicle contrary to section 249(1)(a) of the Criminal Code of Canada (CC);
- Two counts of Flight While Pursued by Peace Officer contrary to section 249.1(1) CC;
- Theft Under $5000 contrary to section 334(b) CC;
- Possession of Property Obtained by Crime Over $5000 contrary to section 354(1)(a) CC;
- Possession of a Credit Card Obtained by the Commission of an Offence contrary to section 342(1)(c) CC;
- Three counts of Possession of an Identity Document contrary to section 56.1 CC;
- Race a Motor Vehicle – Stunt contrary to section 172(1) of the Highway Traffic Act of Ontario (HTA).
A 16 year-old female, from Saskatchewan, who cannot be identified under the provisions of the Youth Criminal Justice Act (YCJA), has been charged with the following offences:
- Theft Under $5000 contrary to section 334(b) CC;
- Possession of Property Obtained by Crime Over $5000 contrary to section 354(1)(a) CC;
- Possession of a Credit Card Obtained by the Commission of an Offence contrary to section 342(1)(c) CC;
- Three counts of Possession of an Identity Document contrary to section 56.1 CC;
- Two counts of Fail to comply with Undertaking contrary to section 145(3) CC
The James Bay Detachments Crime Unit also assisted in this investigation.
The accused persons are being held in custody and are scheduled to appear at the Ontario Court of Justice in Cochrane, Ontario on August 15, 2018.
