Northeast region

Regional fire situation – August 21, 2018, 17:43

On the afternoon of August 21, there are 35 active forest fires across the Northeast. Of these, only 1 fire is not yet under control. The remaining 34 fires are either being held, under control or being observed.
One new fire was confirmed today, at the time of this update:
- Sudbury 117 covers 0.1 of a hectare and is located approximately 2.5 km west of Wolseley Bay.

Northwest region

Regional fire situation: Aug. 21, 2018

There were eight new fires confirmed in the Northwest Region by the mid-afternoon of Aug. 21.

At the time of this update there were 63 active fires in the Northwest Region. Nine of those fires were not under control, one was being held, six were under control and 47 were under observation. A total of seven fires have been declared out thus far today.

The fire hazard is mainly high across the Northwest Region with areas of extreme hazard in the Kenora, Dryden and Fort Frances Districts. The Thunder Bay and north shore of Lake Superior area ranges from a low to moderate hazard.

Nipigon Fire 65
- South of Hebner Lake , approximately 155 kilometres north of Greenstone

- Near Clarkson lake, approximately 6.5 kilometres east of Nestor Falls

RESTRICTED FIRE ZONES

Northeast region

The Ministry of Natural Resources and Forestry implemented Restricted Fire Zones across parts of the northeast and central region as outlined on the interactive map. This will remain in place until further notice. See the fire map for the zones covered. For more information on what is restricted and the legislation, visit the Restricted Fire Zone page. The area includes:

North of Rosseau, northwest to Espanola and Cartier, over to the Quebec border including Temagami and Mattawa north of the Mattawa River. This includes Parry Sound, Burk’s Falls, Powassan, North Bay and Greater Sudbury.
Residents outside the Restricted Fire Zone are urged to check with municipal fire department for local burning restrictions.

Northwest region

The Ministry of Natural Resources and Forestry implemented a Restricted Fire Zone across parts of the northwest region as outlined on the interactive map. Kenora, Fort Frances and Dryden Districts, as well as the southern portions of Red Lake, Sioux Lookout and Thunder Bay Districts.
Excluded from the Restricted Fire Zone is the City of Thunder Bay and organized municipalities of Neebing, Gillies, O’Connor, Oliver/Paipoonge, Shuniah and Dorion.
The unincorporated areas of Pass Lake and Sleeping Giant Provincial Park are also excluded from the Restricted Fire Zone.
Residents outside the Restricted Fire Zone are urged to check with municipal fire department for local burning restrictions.

You are responsible for fires you light

From April through October, people using outdoor fires must follow strict guidelines under the Forest Fires Prevention Act of Ontario to ensure their fires are properly managed.

Anyone who starts a fire outdoors must take all necessary steps to tend the fire, keep it under control, and make sure the fire is out before leaving the site. A person failing to burn safely could be fined and held responsible for the cost of putting out the fire. People living in municipalities should check with local fire officials for bylaws on outdoor fires.
