Ontario Supporting Northern Film and TV Industry
Investments to Create Jobs and Boost Economy in Northern Ontario
Ontario is investing in film and television productions to create jobs and grow the northern economy.
Glenn Thibeault, MPP for Sudbury, on behalf of Michael Gravelle, Minister of Northern Development and Mines, made the announcement today in Sudbury.
Through the Northern Ontario Heritage Fund Corporation (NOHFC), the province is investing in 18 film and television productions, including the second season of the Canadian Screen Awards nominated TV series “Bad Blood” and the production of the Netflix TV series “V-Wars” as well as seven other projects in the Sudbury area.
The productions will be filmed in and around Sudbury, Sault Ste. Marie and North Bay and will bring close to 100 jobs to the area during production. NOHFC investments for the film and television industry also support local hotels, restaurants and other businesses that serve the cast and crew during production in the North.
Ontario is also investing in a number of other projects in the Sudbury region, including:
- Laurentian University to create a new learning centre and additional laboratory space
- Science North for renovations and to install hubs in six communities across Northern Ontario that will have labs, exhibits and programming spaces.
Investing in the northern economy is part of the government’s plan to support care, create opportunity and make life more affordable during this period of rapid economic change. The plan includes free prescription drugs for everyone under 25, and 65 or over, through the biggest expansion of medicare in a generation, free tuition for hundreds of thousands of students, a higher minimum wage and better working conditions, and free preschool child care from 2 ½ to kindergarten.

- The NOHFC has supported the growth of film and television production in Northern Ontario by providing more than $103.9 million to 155 projects since 2013. This has leveraged more than $508 million in direct economic activity.
