NOSM Hosting Northernmost Premiere of Bending the Arc Tuesday, March 22

The Northern Ontario School of Medicine (NOSM) will be hosting the northernmost premiere of the documentary Bending the Arc since its first screening at the Sundance Film Festival in 2017.

The event is open to the public and free with a donation to local food banks. Members of the media are welcome to attend.
A screening of the film will be followed by a discussion with Mark Brender, National Director of Partners in Health Canada; Sol Mamakwa, Health Advisor for Nishnawbe Aski Nation (NAN); and a panel of physicians and medical students experienced in global health, including: Dr. Jack Haggarty, Psychiatrist and NOSM Professor; Dr. Alex Anawati, Emergency Physician, NOSM Assistant Professor, and NOSM Board Member; and, Natalie Taylor, NOSM medical student.
Bending the Arc tells the story of doctors and activists Paul Farmer, Jim Yong Kim, and Ophelia Dahl, who founded Partners in Health and started a movement that changed global health forever.
While working in a squatter settlement in Haiti in the 1980s, Drs. Farmer, Kim, and Dahl developed a remarkable model of how to deliver care in the most unlikely places: they trained their friends and neighbours—all ordinary Haitian villagers—as health-care workers.
In addition to Sundance, the film has been screened at the Miami International Film Festival and the San Francisco Film Festival, and won Best Documentary Feature Film at the Greenwich International Film Festival in 2017.
This event is hosted in collaboration with Compass North Student-Led Health Outreach, Reach Access Zhibbi (RAZ) Interprofessional Student-Led Clinic, NOSM Student Society Global Health Group, Nu-Vision Ministry Canada and NOSM’s Community Engagement portfolio.

L’École de médecine du Nord de l’Ontario présente la première
dans l’extrême Nord de Bending the Arc
L’École de médecine du Nord de l’Ontario (EMNO) présentera la première dans l’extrême Nord du documentaire Bending of the Arc qui a fait ses débuts au festival du film Sundance en 2017.

L’événement est public et l’entrée est gratuite avec un don aux banques alimentaires locales. Les membres des médias sont également bienvenus.
Le visionnement du film sera suivi d’un débat avec Mark Bender, directeur national de Partners in Health Canada; Sol Mamakwa, conseillère en santé de la Nation Nishnawbe Aski; un groupe de médecins et d’étudiants en médecine spécialistes de la médecine mondiale, notamment le DrJack Haggarty, psychiatre et professeur à l’EMNO; le Dr Alex Anawati, médecin urgentiste, professeur adjoint à l’EMNO et membre du conseil de l’EMNO; Natalie Taylor, étudiante en médecine à l’EMNO.
Bending the Arc raconte l’histoire des médecins et activistes Paul Farmer, Jim Yong Kim et Ophelia Dahl qui ont fondé Partners in Health et lancé un mouvement qui a changé la santé mondiale à jamais.
En effet, lorsqu’ils travaillaient dans une colonie de squatters en Haïti dans les années 1980, les Drs Farmer, Kim et Dahl ont mis au point un modèle remarquable de prestation de soins dans les lieux les plus improbables qui a consisté à former leurs amis et voisins, tous des villageois haïtiens ordinaires, pour agir comme travailleurs de la santé.
En plus du festival Sundance, le film a été présenté au festival international du film de Miami et au festival du film de San Francisco, et a remporté le prix du meilleur documentaire au festival international du film de Greenwich en 2017.
Cet événement est organisé en collaboration avec Compass North Student-Led Health Outreach, la Reach Access Zhibbi Interprofessional Student-Led Clinic, le NOSM Student Society Global Health Group, Nu-Vision Ministry Canada et le Porte-feuille de l’engagement communautaire de l’EMNO.
