MP Congratulates CMIC and CEMI on ‘Innovation Superclusters Initiative’

MP Marc Serré congratulates CMIC and CEMI for their ‘Innovation Superclusters Initiative’ (ISI) submission, selected as one of the 9 finalist by Innovation Canada to submit a final application; if successful will access a piece of the $950 million of funding over five years.

NICKEL BELT/GREATER SUDBURY, ON – Today the Honourable Navdeep Bains, Minister of Innovation, Science and Economic Development, announced that the joint letter of intent submitted by the Canada Mining Innovation Council (CMIC) and the Centre of Excellence in Mining Innovation (CEMI) to the Innovation Superclusters Initiative, overseen by Innovation Canada, was short-listed to submit a full application to access a portion of the $950 million of government funding over five years to create a national mining “supercluster”. In their letter of intent, CMIC and CEMI proposed to create a new, joint consortium called CLEER (Clean, Low-energy, Effective, Engaged, and Remediation) that would form the backbone of the new national mining “supercluster.”

Nickel Belt MP Marc Serré

Marc Serré, Member of Parliament for Nickel Belt, issued the following statement after Innovation Canada revealed its shortlist to submit a full application to access Innovation Supercluster Initiative funding:

“I would like to congratulate CMIC, CEMI, and the countless municipal, academic and industry leaders in the mining sector for their success in being shortlisted to submit a full application to Innovation Canada. I am proud of this group for collaborating on a proposal that, if successful, will spur on innovation, create well-paying jobs, improve safety and increase sustainability in the mining sector, and increase Canada’s mining exports around the world.

Many hours of hard work and dedication were invested in the development and creation of the CLEER Supercluster submission. There is a united front by all who see the great benefit for the future growth of the mining industry through this initiative; a collaboration that is the first of its kind on a national level.

I have no doubt that the CLEER Consortium will develop and submit a strong full application to the Innovation Superclusters Initiative, and I will continue to be committed to supporting the consortium’s application as it continues through Innovation Canada’s competitive selection process,” said Serré.
