Is the Dryden mill site still leaking toxic mercury upstream from Grassy Narrows?
Strong new scientific evidence indicates yes. Fresh river sediment downstream from mill is 130x above normal.
TORONTO, ON – A new scientific report will be released today presenting “strong evidence” that one of Canada’s most notorious toxic dumping sites is still releasing mercury into the Wabigoon River upstream from Grassy Narrows and two other First Nations, 55 years after the dumping began. Mercury levels in the top layers of sediment have been found to increase by 130 times as the river passes the Dryden mill site. Multiple generations of Indigenous people living downstream suffer from the debilitating health effects of mercury poisoning including loss of vision, imbalance, trembling, and learning disabilities with lifelong impacts.
