Hughes Lauds Volunteers Combatting Hunger in Algoma-Manioulin-Kapuskasing

OTTAWA, ON – As we approach the holidays Canadians think about giving back to their communities. But according to Algoma-Manitoulin-Kapuskasing MP Carol Hughes, for people involved with food banks this is an everyday occurrence because they know that hunger never takes a holiday and that need is always growing.
Hughes drew the House’s attention to Pastor Dan Lee of Chapleau who she called part of the solution for his work as the founder of that community’s food bank in addition to running the Chapleau Pentecostal Church. She also praised the Rotary Club of Kapuskasing who are taking their turn running the food bank after years of great service by the Kinsmen Club.
“But food banks aren’t the only way that need is met in the North,” said Hughes. “On Manitoulin Island this November, over 6,000 individuals were served during the Homeland Mission free food giveaway led by Pastor Rodney Deforge.”
Hughes also commended the work being done to maintain an Elliot Lake tradition that addresses hunger and loneliness over the holidays.
“And in Elliot Lake, the Al Collett Memorial Christmas Dinner continues a 33 year tradition of giving to those in need of food and company over the holidays.”, said Hughes.
Hughes said that “these are just a few examples of how people all across Algoma-Manitoulin-Kapuskasing are volunteering to make their communities more compassionate and caring for the holidays and all through the year.”
