Hughes Challenges MPs to Act on Violence Against Women

OTTAWA, ON – Citing statistics that show Canada’s 20 year commitment hasn’t put a dent into the incidence of violence against women, Algoma-Manitoulin-Kapuskasing MP Carol Hughes challenged MPs to put words into action.
Delivering a statement to mark the beginning of 16 Days of Action Against Gender-Based violence, Hughes told the Commons that the International Day of Action for the Elimination of Violence Against Women (November 25th) should become a launching pad to change the course after decades of inaction by Canada.
“25% of women will be affected by gender-based violence in their lifetime. This is simply unacceptable, “said Hughes. “20 years after committing at the United Nations to promote the protection of women and girls, Canada still does not have a national action plan.”
Hughes explained that in the absence of a national plan of action, rates of violence against women have remained largely unchanged since Canada made this commitment.
“Now is the time for MPs to work together to create an expanded strategy to end violence against women” said Hughes. “It is time for a well-funded network of women’s domestic violence shelters that will include shelters for First Nations, Métis and Inuit women. It is time for action on a national plan that includes addressing issues in the education, policing and the justice systems – all key services that can help end violence against women.”
Hughes concluded by reminding parliament that it is time for action, because “actions matter,” which is also the hashtag to promote the campaign on social media.
