GREENSTONE, ON– On October 1, 2016 at approximately 11:40pm, the Greenstone detachment of the Ontario Provincial Police (OPP) was contacted regarding two overdue boaters. A 63 year old male and a 61 year old female of Nipigon Township had been fishing on Leopard Lake and had not returned to shore.
A marine trained member of the Greenstone OPP and an officer from Nipigon OPP detachment arrived at Leopard Lake and began patrolling the water for signs of the overdue couple.
At 4:06am, police located the overdue couple on the Southwest corner of Wood Island. They had lost their bearings and had been unable to find their way back to the boat launch. Their boat motor had also stopped working.
The couple were uninjured and were towed safely to shore by police.
The OPP would like to remind the public to take the necessary precautions needed to ensure safe boating and a safe return to shore.
