Investment in Training Enhances Economic Development Services in Nishnawbe Aski Nation Territory

fednor-colTHUNDER BAY, ON – Don Rusnak, Member of Parliament for Thunder Bay—Rainy River, on behalf of the Honourable Navdeep Bains, Minister of Innovation, Science and Economic Development, and Minister responsible for FedNor, announced Friday (September 23) that a FedNor investment of $250,000 enabled Nishnawbe Aski Nation (NAN) to provide economic development officer training in First Nation communities in Northern Ontario.

The FedNor contribution assisted NAN in delivering a series of nine modules, aimed at addressing the unique challenges and opportunities that many of its communities face as they continue to work toward economic growth and sustainability. As a result of the training, Indigenous economic development professionals are better equipped to capitalize on resource development opportunities and partnerships with the private sector.

  • The funding announced September 23, 2016 was provided through FedNor’s Northern Ontario Development Program, which supports projects that promote sustainable community economic development, enhance business development and growth, and facilitate innovation.
  • Nishnawbe Aski Nation is a regional organization representing the political, social and economic interests of the approximately 45,000 Anishinaabek of Northern Ontario residing in 49 First Nation communities within the territory of James Bay Treaty 9 and the Ontario portions of Treaty 5.
