Greenstone OPP Respond to Nuisance Bear Calls

GREENSTONE, ON – Greenstone Detachment of the Ontario Provincial Police (OPP) in partnership with the Ministry of Natural Resources and Forestry (MNRF) and the Municipality of Greenstone are making efforts to trap bears that have been a nuisance in the town area.
Greenstone OPP, along with many other OPP detachments in the North West Region, have recently been handling calls on a near daily basis regarding bears in the community.
The MNRF has agreed to assist due to the ongoing complaints of several bears that have been frequenting local neighbourhoods and as a result of their investigation the MNRF has set up a trap in the Geraldton area. MNRF request co-operation from members of the public with the following actions:
- Keep your dogs in your house or on a leash;
- Keep your garbage locked away until the morning of garbage collection;
- Should you come across a trap, do not interfere with the trap in any way;
- Should you see a bear in a trap, notify the OPP at 1-888-310-1122;
- Only call 9-1-1, if a bear poses an immediate threat to public safety by exhibiting threatening or aggressive behavior;
- Keep away from the traps.
