MARATHON, ON – Over the past few weeks of May, the Ontario Provincial Police (OPP) Marathon detachment has received several reports of discarded garbage. This garbage is being dumped in areas not allocated for waste disposal.
The OPP are currently investigating several of these sites and charges are pending. Some these charges can include charges under the Public Lands Act such as:
- Litter Highway, total payable fine of $110.00
- Unlawfully cause to be deposited any material, substance or thing on public lands, total payable fine of $240.00
Also charges can be laid under local Municipal By-Laws:
- No person shall permit or cause to be permitted the throwing, placing or depositing of waste on private or public lands, fine of $105.00 plus the victim surcharge or up to $2,000.00 if convicted in court.
Residences are encouraged to use their local designated waste disposal sites (WDS) to dispose of household garbage. Many WDS have areas to dispose of recyclable material free of charge such as cardboard, boxboard, paper, plastics, steel, electronics, household hazardous waste, fire place ashes, and fibre such as leaves, grass clippings, wood shavings, sawdust, and brush. Most municipalities have online web sites that can be searched for hours of operation as well as fees and type of waste or recyclables excepted at their WDS.
Police ask anyone with information regarding illegal dumping of waste to call your local OPP at 1-888-310-1122. If you wish to remain anonymous, call Crime Stoppers at 1-800-222-TIPS (8477), where you may be eligible for cash rewards of up to $2,000.
