Superior-Greenstone District School Board’s first Google Apps for Education Day was hosted  at Lake Superior High School on May 17th. The LSHS Google Day was made possible from funding provided by Student Voice. Alex Halonen, the Lake Superior High School student trustee, helped create the successful application for funding after realizing the need for all students to access Google in all their classes.  Alex was also a key part of the organizing team.

Lake Superior High School proposed a Google Day as way to engage our students in their learning and to provide a co-learning opportunity for both staff and students on the effective use of Google Apps for Education (GAFE). By making the shift towards being a GAFE school, we are being responsive to all the learners in the building. Many of our students come from our coterminous partner schools which are also GAFE schools and so students are coming to Lake Superior High School with this particular skill set and expectation. By integrating GAFE into daily practice, staff and students can easily create, collaborate and provide feedback to one another in a safe and secure online environment.

Ms. Patterson, principal, welcomed everyone to the event and stated that “we are all learners together on this journey and we will learn from each other, regardless of your role in the school. This is a powerful message that let’s our students take leadership in their learning alongside their teacher. It’s a profound shift in thinking. Teachers and students engage in the learning together rather than being directed by the teacher.
