A new environmental group for the Nipigon/Red Rock/Lake Helen/Rocky Bay area will be meeting at 7 p.m. on May 3rd at the Lake Helen Community Centre. The meeting will focus on Great Lakes microplastics, especially the small plastic “nurdles”, or beads, which have been washing up on Nipigon Bay beaches. A meeting agenda and complete information package can be accessed by clicking: http://infosuperior.com/meetings/ , the link includes brief video footage/photos of plastic beads washed up in the Gravel River/Mountain Bay area.
The purpose of the meeting is to facilitate better understanding of microplastics, engage in productive discussion and hear suggestions for cleanup. Everyone is welcome. There is no charge and refreshments will be served. Please confirm your attendance with Jim Bailey. Can’t attend in person? Join the meeting online – directions are included at the aforementioned link.
This new environmental group has been formed by members of the Public Advisory Committee to the Nipigon Bay Remedial Action Plan. Group members themselves suggested microplastics as the topic of their first meeting. Members have not yet chosen a name for their group. If you have any difficulty accessing meeting information or have any questions or concerns, please feel free to get in touch with Thunder Bay/Nipigon Bay Remedial Action Plan Coordinator Jim Bailey, at 807-343-8514 or jfbailey@lakeheadu.ca.
