International Women’s Day Highlights Empowermnt: Hughes

ELLIOT LAKE, ON – Algoma-Manitoulin-Kapuskasing, MP Carol Hughes is preparing for International Women’s Day on March 8th.
Hughes says that every year it becomes more important to work on women’s issues since there are people who believe that equality is a struggle that is already behind us.
“Nothing could be further from the truth,” said Hughes. “In fact this year’s theme shows there is still much work to do.”
The theme for 2016 is Women’s Empowerment Leads to Equality and people are being encouraged to use social media to promote inspirational women with the hashtag #YouAreEmpowerment.
In addition to the official theme for this year, Hughes is asking people to consider ways we can show girls that they are valued and empowered as well.
“The work done by the charity Plan International and their campaign Because I am a Girl is inspirational.” said Hughes. “With these concentrated efforts we can forge a future where everyone is able to contribute and isn’t held back because of cultural restraints or a lack of opportunity.”
On March the 8th, Hughes will be participating in an International Women’s Day breakfast on the Hill.
“Parliament has been seen historically as an Old Boy’s Club so I’m pleased that New Democrats are always pushing those boundaries,” said Hughes. “My party has supported me all the way and put forward my name so that I was appointed Assistant Deputy Speaker. I hope it is another example for young girls to see that they can achieve their goals.”
