Marathon OPP : Charges Laid for Tobacco and Tax Act

OPPcolourMARATHON, ONOn February 2, 2016 at approximately 3:00 p.m. members of the Ontario Provincial Police (OPP) Marathon Detachment conducted a R.I.D.E. program at Highway 17, Township of Marathon. A west bound commercial motor vehicle was stopped and after speaking to the male driver, an investigation was initiated. As a result, the driver was found to have unmarked cigarettes in his possession.

The 39 year old male driver of Winnipeg, Manitoba was charged with:

  • Possess Unmarked Cigarettes for the Purpose of Sale
  • Possess Unmarked Cigarettes, contrary to the Tobacco and Tax Act.

On February 3, 2016 at 1:35 p.m. officers conducted a traffic stop of a west bound vehicle at Hwy 17, Township of Marathon. After investigation, officers seized a large amount of unmarked cigarettes located in the vehicle.

The vehicle occupants, a 63 year old male of Emerson, Manitoba and a 51 year old male of Winnipeg, Manitoba have been charged with:

  • Possess Unmarked Cigarettes for the Purpose of Sale
  • Possess Unmarked Cigarettes contrary to the Tobacco and Tax Act.

The accused are to appear at the Ontario Court of Justice in Marathon on April 19, 2016 to answer to these charges.
