Goldie Rivers (nee Pupich) passed away peacefully at the Nipigon District Memorial Hospital, with her family by her side, on Sunday, February 14, 2016 at the age of 91. Beloved wife of the late James Raymond Rivers. Loving mother of Lorraine Anaka (Wayne), Carol Schwartz (Bernie) and Jim Rivers (Debbie). Proud Granny to Jeremey Anaka, Jarrod Anaka (Melanie), Kira Schwartz, Heather Ligresti (Gio), Jamie Rivers and Celina McKinnon (Ryan). Awesome Great Granny to Caleigh Anaka, Kayla and Karra Anaka, Brady Rivers, Brandon, Ayla and Brighton McKinnon. She is survived by her sister Mary Whitford and sisters-in-law Elia Pupich and Johanna Rivers.
She was born in Rim, Yugoslavia and came to Canada at the age of 10. She lived in Schumacher, Ontario were she met and married the love of her life James Rivers. They raised their children in Larder Lake, Ontario and Manitouwadge, Ontario. During her life in Manitouwadge she worked as a teller for the CIBC bank until she was hired by Noranda Mines, Geco Division as an Engineering Secretary until retirement. Her family was her life. She also loved to garden, bowl and play cards at the Manitouwadge Golden Age Center. A few years after she lost her husband she had some health issues and came to live with her son and daughter-in-law in Nipigon, Ontario. One of her favourite pastimes was blueberry picking. She loved to bowl in the Senior League in Red Rock until further health issues prevented her from participating. As the nurses in Nipigon Hospital will attest she always had a smile hello and a thank you afterwards. The family would like to thank the staff at the Nipigon District Memorial Hospital, especially the acute care nurses for their loving care and comfort during Goldie’s stay.
No service will be held at this time. Cremation has taken place and a celebration of her life will take place at a later date with interment to follow at the Manitouwadge Cemetery. If people so wish, Memorial Donations to the Nipigon District Memorial Hospital Acute Care Unit would be greatly appreciated.
