Government of Canada Investment Supports Jobs, Growth and a Strong Economy in the Fort Frances and Rainy River Regions
FORT FRANCES, ON – Federal Economic Development Initiative for Northern Ontario – FedNor Don Rusnak, Member of Parliament for Thunder Bay—Rainy River, on behalf of the Honourable Navdeep Bains, Minister of Innovation, Science and Economic Development, and Minister responsible for FedNor, today announced an investment of $1,185,000 in support of two projects that will help boost business development and growth, create regional economic development opportunities and enhance tourism.
Of the total, $900,000 will enable the Rainy River Future Development Corporation (RRFDC) to provide small and medium-sized enterprises with access to capital and business counselling services in the Rainy River region for a three-year period. The remaining $285,000 will assist the RRFDC in developing a three-year regional planning and implementation initiative on behalf of eight communities within its service area.
The project will focus on developing opportunities in forestry, mining and tourism, as well as providing professional business support to companies looking to expand into new markets. Participating communities include: Alberton, Chapple, Emo, Fort Frances, Lake of the Woods, LaVallee, Rainy River and Morley.

- The funding announced today is provided through FedNor’s Community Futures and Northern Ontario Development Programs, which support projects that promote sustainable community economic development, enhance business development and growth, and facilitate innovation.
- The Rainy River Future Development Corporation is one of 24 Community Futures Development Corporations funded by FedNor to serve Northern Ontario businesses and communities. Each of these community-based, not-for-profit organizations is run by a board of local volunteers and staffed by experienced business and economic development professionals.
