Province Proposes Legislation to Modernize and Simplify Mining Claims
Wednesday, December 2, Ontario introduced legislation as part of the ongoing Mining Act Modernization process that, if passed, would improve how mining claims are registered and enhance the province’s global competitiveness in the mining industry.
The proposed Mining Amendment Act, 2015, would enable the online registration of mining claims as well as a modernized electronic mining lands administration system.
Online mining claim registration would benefit the province’s mining sector by encouraging prospecting, claim registration and exploration, key to the future development of new mines. It would also be more respectful of private landowners and eliminate the impact on the environment of ground staking of mining claims.
Ontario is continuing its Mining Act Modernization process to ensure it remains a global leader in mineral exploration and development.
Modernizing how mining claims are made is part of the government’s plan to build Ontario up. The four-part plan includes investing in people’s talents and skills, making the largest investment in public infrastructure in Ontario’s history, creating a dynamic, innovative environment where business thrives, and building a secure retirement savings plan.
Quick Facts
- The Mining Act Modernization process is an important part of the Ontario government’s Growth Plan for Northern Ontario.
- The online registration of claims would make boundaries of mining claims precise, as licensed prospectors would register claims by selecting pre-set cells from an online grid overlaid on a map of Ontario.
- In 2014, Ontario’s mining sector supported 26,000 direct jobs, 50,000 additional jobs in processing and manufacturing, and produced $11 billion in minerals.
