Nipigon OPP Charge Impaired Driver
NIPIGON, ON – On August 22, 2015 at 10:17 p.m. Nipigon Ontario Provincial Police (OPP) responded to a single motor vehicle collision that occurred at the Nipigon Marina. The driver of a south bound pickup truck crossed into the oncoming lane and collided with a bridge railing. The pickup then rolled over and came to rest upside down in Clearwater Creek. Nipigon Fire and ambulance services attended the scene. The driver was transported to Nipigon Hospital and treated for non-life threatening injuries. Investigation revealed the driver was under the influence of alcohol.
Phillip Arthur WAWIA, a 40-year-old male from Lake Helen, Ontario has been charged with:
- Operate motor vehicle with over 80 milligrams of alcohol in 100 millilitres of blood contrary to section 253(a) of the Criminal Code
- Operate motor vehicle while ability is Impaired by alcohol contrary to section 253 (b) of the Criminal Code.
His vehicle has been impounded for 7 days along with an automatic 90 days driver’s license suspension.
The Coldwater Creek bridge remains closed pending an inspection by a structural engineer to determine the extent of damage caused by the collision.
