Funds raised to help put an end to youth homelessness in Thunder Bay
Shelter House receives $8,960 donation from Thunder Bay’s The Home Depot store as part of The Orange Door Project
THUNDER BAY, ON – By purchasing a paper door for $2, Thunder Bay’s The Home Depot customers generously supported Shelter House to raise $8,960 in 36 days, with the goal of putting an end to youth homelessness.
Shelter House Thunder Bay provides short-term relief to those in need of shelter, food, clothing and access to resources. Shelter House will use one hundred per cent of donations to support housing and life-skills development programs such as renovating youth dorms and transitioning individuals towards successful independent living with the help of various community partners.
“We are grateful for the opportunity to be a part of the Orange Door Project,” said Patty Hajdu, Executive Director of Shelter House, “The Home Depot Canada Foundation is our ally in putting an end to youth homelessness. As a local, non-profit organization, this partnership allows us to raise funds on a larger scale than what we could do on our own.”
Shelter House provides short-term relief to those in need of shelter and food. Shelter House Thunder Bay is the largest homeless shelter in Northwestern Ontario, sleeping 77 people nightly and feeding on average, 500 meals a day. While striving to serve all those in need with dignity and respect, Shelter House offers a safe, warm place with trustworthy, compassionate staff. We are also unique in our ability to serve people who use substances and are intoxicated. This challenging work reflects our belief that all people deserve shelter, regardless of their circumstances. The services we offer are focused on improving the health and safety of those we serve, and the community at large.
Home Depot Canada Foundation is committed to supporting initiatives that help put an end to youth homelessness in Canada. On any given night, more than 6,000 young people are without a place to call home, making youth homelessness one of the most urgent social issues facing Canadians today. Through The Orange Door Project initiative, in 2013 the Foundation made a three-year, $10-million pledge to support long-term solutions that will put an end to youth homelessness in Canada. In collaboration with community partners, thought leaders, The Home Depot Canada’s suppliers, customers and associates we are focused on improving places through renovation and repair projects and supporting programs that give youth the resources they require to build brighter futures.
