Federal Liberal Candidate Visits Manitouwadge
It was a rainy day when we visited Manitouwadge, but people were out and about and eager to share their thoughts about the upcoming federal election.
First stop was the Post Office. We arrived around 10 am or so, and as people began to filter in, I introduced myself and handed out my card. Many people stopped to chat, and even those that were in a hurry offered a smiling hello. It was great to see and talk with so many people!
The issues residents shared were varied, from high property taxes, to the need for investments in infrastructure, and the importance of stimulating good job opportunities in the area. But what we heard most about was the concern that folks have with the bears. People talked about the sheer number and obvious fearlessness of the bears, and shared their worry that without a wildlife management plan, it was only a matter of time that a serious bear incident would occur. I promised that I would forward these concerns to Minister Bill Mauro.
Our visit also included a small business tour, a meeting with staff members at Manroc Developments Inc. and an opportunity to talk with Mayor Andy Major, who filled us in on some of the town’s struggles, successes, and hopes for the future.
In this 2015 election, the Township of Manitouwadge moves from the Algoma—Manitoulin—Kapuskasing riding to Thunder Bay-Superior North. As your federal Liberal candidate, I see great opportunity to work in partnership with our hardworking Liberal MPPs Michael Gravelle and Bill Mauro in addressing the needs of citizens of Manitouwadge.
Thank you very much for your warm welcome, and I look forward to another visit soon.
