MARATHON, ON – Spencer Jose didn’t fully develop his love for music until he laid hands on his friend’s new guitar- a birthday gift from his father. Before long, the 2 friends formed a band in Marathon called “Small Town Riot”. The band played in a number of local events to much fanfare before splitting up when one member moved away.
Spencer, who lived in Marathon for 18 years, moved to Sudbury in 2008 to take music classes at Cambrian College. After 1 term, he left the program to pursue his true passion- playing live music. Spencer played and toured as a bass player, drummer, guitarist and singer in England and Wales as well as coast-to-coast here in Canada. After all of these experiences, Spencer finally had the confidence to start writing his own songs, leading the formation of his own band- “Carden Cove”.
Spencer and band mates Kris Dickson, Zachary Lamothe and Barry Miles recently released their first CD- “Grown Slow” which pays homage to growing up in small town Northern Ontario. Spencer is hoping to raise enough funds through the sale of these CD’s to perform a live show here in Marathon. As a friend and former classmate of Spencer’s, I was happy to offer up the services of Crossover Video and Games to act as the destination to purchase his CD. Northern music and musicians are an integral part of TVO’s Hard Rock Medical. The overwhelming audience response to the music from season one prompted TVO to commission a series of mini-docs on the Musician of the North. A dozen students from the Digital Cinematography and the TV/Video Production Program’s at Canadore College in North Bay, took up the challenge and have written, shot, produced and edited Five “mini-docs” on the musicians featured in this Season of Hard Rock Medical.
