MANITOUWADGE, ON – Saturday, May 9th, the Manitouwadge Cancer Assistance Group held their annual Share the Care 5km Walk & BBQ. The annual fundraiser, hosted in collaboration with the Manitouwadge Volunteer Firefighters, has become an increasingly important part of the MCAG’s funding as the community’s population decreases and the group hosts fewer events.  In spite of the early morning frost and some drizzling rain at lunch, participants enjoyed warm and sunny skies during most of the event, a nice contrast to recent years when walkers braved heavy rain and snow.

More than 100 people participated in the walk and BBQ resulting in excess if $5,500 raised to provide financial assistance to local cancer survivors for the costs of fighting cancer.

Among the participants was the Duffy-Pigeau Family who walked in memory of Owen Duffy. Owen’s daughter Martina who, with her husband and two boys, collected more than $1,200 for the 2015 MCAG walk shared this message:

“Our Fam Jam would like to thank everyone who donated in Memory of Dad, Owen Duffy. Special shout out to Manroc for their generous donation. Dad worked for Manroc for many years, they were so wonderful to our family thru Dad’s diagnosis, treatment and to mom Beatrice Duffy after Dad passed away. Manroc is a wonderful Mining Company, who take care of their own. From the owners, admin staff and especially to all the workers. Thank you for everything.”

In addition to the Volunteer firefighters whom MCAG President Jackie Jung thanked for their help adding that “…without them there would not be a BBQ!” Jung also shared special thanks to the Rendezvous Restaurant and it’s owner Linda Baril for the use of their BBQ and being a pick-up point for the Pledge Sheets.
