April 1 marked the debut of the forest fire season in Ontario. Since then, the Northeast Fire Region has confirmed and suppressed 9 fires totaling 39 hectares. The most recent fire was yesterday, confirmed as Sudbury 4 and called out at 1.5 hectares.
The forest fire hazard is considered moderate in the south and southeast, while areas west of Massie and north of Temagami are showing a low fire hazard.
Spring training is a major priority for Aviation, Forest Fire and Emergency Services. Fire crews are showing new crewmembers important techniques for the safe and effective suppression of forest fires.
People are reminded that under the Ontario Forest Fires Prevention Act they are responsible for safe outdoor fire management and must follow guidelines for burning brush and grass. Campfires are to be tended at all times and put out before leaving.
by calling 310-FIRE (3473). In regions south of the French and Mattawa rivers, forest fires can be reported by calling your local fire department. If you are reporting a fire via satellite phone please dial 705-564-0289.
