MISHKEEGOGAMANG FIRST NATION, ON – March 7, 2015 at approximately 5:41pm (EST) officers with the Nishnawbe-Aski Police Service responded to a report of a stabbing at a residence on Mishkeegogamang First Nation. The officers located a seriously injured male at the residence, initiated CPR and transported the male to the nursing station where he was pronounced dead.
The victim has been identified as 29-year-old Franklin KWANDIBENS from Mishkeegogamang First Nation. A post mortem examination is scheduled to take place in Kenora on March 9, 2015.
On March 7, 2015, 30-year-old Janet MASAKEYASH from Mishkeegogamang First Nation was arrested and subsequently charged with Second Degree Murder contrary to section 235(1) of the Criminal Code. The accused was remanded into custody and will appear in the Ontario Court of Justice in Kenora on March 10, 2015.
The Nishnawbe-Aski Police Service with the assistance of the Ontario Provincial Police (OPP) North West Region Crime Unit under the direction of Detective Inspector Randy HEIDA of the OPP Criminal Investigation Branch (CIB) is investigating the circumstances surrounding this death.
