#CrossoverInsider : New Release Trailers and Top3 Surprises of 2014

WEEKLY WRAP-UP

crossovervideoOne of the downsides of the holiday season in the movie industry is often a lack of new releases. Now that we are well into January, the uptick of new releases will be fast and furious leading right through to February when a number of award nominated movies will debut. There will a number of key major releases over the next few weeks starting with this week and one of the biggest box office surprises of 2014. With over 166 million dollars in box office revenue (a major accomplishment for a movie that isn’t a sequel), Gone Girl was a pleasant surprise for both theatre-goers and critics alike. This week, it becomes available on DVD and Blu-Ray along with eight other titles;

TOP 3 SURPRISES OF THE YEAR

As mentioned in last week’s Crossover Insider, this week I will be taking a look at 3 movies that surprised me. In other words, I watched them with very little in terms of expectations and ended up beinf very pleasantly surprised.

Without further delay, here are my top 3 surprises of 2014;

Blended: Adam Sandler is one of those actors where you either take him or leave him. His earlier movies like Happy Gilmore and Billy Madison became cult classics. Since then, his movies have been hit and miss to say the least. With that in mind, I tuned into Blended with no expectations. As it turns out, I actually ended up thoroughly enjoying this movie. It was funny, touching and family friendly. There were a few scenes where I laughed out loud- something that hasn’t happened to me with any of Adam Sabdler’s recent movies. His chemistry with Drew Berrymore no doubt helped in making the movie likeable and enjoyable. Obviously you shouldn’t expect much with regards to acting or substance, but if you’ve been holding off on watching Blended in fear that it would be yet another Sandler dud, please don’t hold off any longer!

A Night in Old Mexico: This movie had no theatrical release and no marketing behind it. As a result, I had no idea what to expect. This western themed comedy/thriller starring Robert Duvall ended up being a lot of fun to watch! Again, you can’t expect the calibre of acting that you’d find in a big-budget movie, but the story line and characters will keep you engaged from start to finish. It had its funny moments too! The fast pace was another welcomed element. Please check out A Night in Old Mexico for a surprisingly good western/thriller that should have you glued to your screen!

Into the Storm: Twister was one of my favorite movies growing up. I love movies that feature natural disasters with big-budget special effects. Needless to say, I was excited to hear that a new tornado themed movie would be released on 2014. Unfortunately, the trailers and commercials did it very little justice, and combined with the poor turnout at the theatres, I was beginning to lose hope in this movie. That was until I watched it. Wow! What an exciting, tense, and visually impressive movie! I was often times literally on the edge of my seat. As the tornadoes tore through the town, I almost felt like I was right in heart of the action- a result of the stunning visuals and sounds.  My only regret was not watching this on Blu-Ray as I could only imagine how impressive the picture and sound quality would have been! This movie is the perfect example of one that was not meant for critics. If you look on any site that offers critic reviews, you’ll probably find poor ratings for Into The Storm.  As a movie lover (and not a critic), I’m here to tell you to ignore the poor reviews and check it out for yourself. I’ve heard great feedback from our customers as well! Please take some time to watch Into the Storm and prepared to be on the edge of your seat!
