Fines Total $1,800 for Illegal Moose Hunting In Wawa Area

A tourist camp, its operator and two were fined a total of $1,800 for illegally hunting moose.

Redwood Enterprises pleaded guilty to unlawfully hunting moose without a valid licence and to issuing a moose validation tag to a person who was not a registered guest. Redwood Enterprises was fined $450 for each offence.

Timothy Wohlfahrt of Aurora, Illinois, the owner of Redwood Enterprises, pleaded guilty to the offence of unlawfully hunting moose without a valid licence and received a $300 fine.Tomahawk, Wis

Evan Derleth and Rod Flohr, both of consin, pleaded guilty to unlawfully hunting moose without a valid licence and each received a $300 fine.

The court heard that Ministry of Natural Resources and Forestry conservation officers checked Redwood Enterprises’ outpost non-resident hunters camp on Vesi Lake on October 20, 2013, and found no one staying there. During the course of the investigation, the officers determined that Derleth and Flohr were staying in a private camp under lease to Derleth. Both individuals were issued Redwood Enterprise moose validation tags by Wohlfarht while not being accommodated at the outpost camp nor having been registered by the outfitter as required by law.

Derleth shot a bull moose while staying at the private camp and tagged it with the moose validation seal obtained from Redwood Enterprises. The moose was seized by officers and the court ordered that it be forfeited to the Crown.

Justice of the Peace Jean-Marie Blier heard the case in the Ontario Court of Justice, Wawa, on November 21, 2014.

Hunters obtaining moose validation tags from tourist outfitters must be registered guests accommodated by the tourist outfitter for the tag to be valid.
