“It’s good to see that the committee work continues and is making progress. A database that tracks the health of miners on the job is a good idea and should be implemented without delay.
However, I also want to remind this government that re-announcing old initiatives does not count for action.
The Minister’s announcement today of “early deliverables” such as industry safety certification standards, to be implemented by late 2015, was announced in 2010 and has been gathering dust for four years.
While preventative measures are important to avoid further deaths, the government needs to provide full accounting of safety in the mining industry through a comprehensive review into the recent and tragic history of underground mining accidents and deaths.”
