Letter to the Editor : Multicultural Association Welcomes Newcomers
Submitted by : Thunder Bay Multicultural Association
Welcome, newcomers to Canada and Northwestern Ontario. Our region is dedicated to helping new arrivals to Canada with settlement and integration to their new communities. Part of what we do is to provide services while you are settling in your new home town. Thunder Bay Multicultural Association provides newcomer settlement services reaching from White River to the Manitoba border. Currently, there are settlement workers who travel to remote Northwestern Ontario District cities and towns offering assistance to newcomers. We provide information and referrals for new immigrants, permanent residents, and refugees, who are making Northwestern Ontario their new home.
Are you a permanent resident of Canada or Convention Refugee, over 18 and unable to attend regular English language classes? LINC School Home Study offers FREE language instruction for Newcomers to Canada. Book an appointment to test your English language skills and get a referral to LINC Home Study.
Understanding domestic violence and how to identify the “at risk” woman or child is the responsibility of each community member. Learn how to help by attending a presentation on domestic violence and woman abuse. The language interpreter service is added support, through interpretation and translation and service providers enabling communication with clients. Victims can access these services at no cost.
“Orientation to Ontario” is another program we can bring to your community as an introduction for newcomers settling in Ontario. Funded by Citizenship and Immigration Canada the Orientation to Ontario project helps the newcomer to get to know Ontario, find supports, settle in the region, find work or start a business, and supports with personal finance information. As everyone plans their life differently, our mandate is to help each individual organize information, identify gaps, and construct settlement plans to meet their needs.
Canada is a proud, multicultural society welcoming newcomers from all over the world. Ontario’s population includes people from over 200 countries who speak more than 130 languages.
