MARATHON, ON – Without knowing the outcome of the provincial election budget deliberations were made a little more difficult for the Superior-Greenstone District School Board but at its regular board meeting held June 23rd trustees approved a $37-million operating budget for 2014-2015.

The budget was developed with a focus on the board’s strategic priorities of student achievement and well-being, responsible stewardship of resources, and the building of relationships. The 2014-2015 budget is based on a projected total enrolment of 1,553 students (796 for elementary; 757 for secondary). Enrolment is projected to be down 42 students from the board’s current enrolment. However, 2014-2015 is the first year in which the board is fully funded for full day kindergarten, which has minimized the impact of the enrolment decline for this year.

The full implementation of Full-Day Kindergarten (FDK), as well as changes in funding for the Special Education grant and new funding for board administration have had a positive impact on the board’s operating budget. Overall grants are up $1.1 million.  The additional funding has been put towards additional staff in the elementary panel as well as at the system level.  The budget provides for the addition of a .5 elementary teacher at Manitouwadge Public School. “We are also pleased to include funding for 2.5 Native Language Teachers in four of our schools where we have a high aboriginal population” said Director of Education, David Tamblyn.  The budget also supports the creation of an Aboriginal System Lead to support the programs that are in place in schools and build stronger ties with the nine First Nation communities the school board serves.

Following the implementation of the Full-Day Kindergarten program Early Childhood Education (ECE) support staff will be added to the kindergarten programs in Schreiber, Terrace Bay and Nipigon.    This adds to the current ECE’s who are working alongside the classroom teacher at B.A. Parker School in Geraldton and Margaret Twomey Public School in Marathon.

School Board Chair Pinky McRae said it has been a long time since we have been in a position to expand our level of programming for our students.  McRae applauded the board and especially senior staff for their fiscal stewardship. “There are a lot of exciting changes in our school board,” she said.  “Senior administration has done an amazing job preparing this budget”.
