MARATHON ON – Monday April 15th, 2014, the Ontario Provincial Police (OPP) Marathon detachment received a call regarding a theft of fuel from the Esso in White River.
Officers patrolled the area and located a vehicle matching the description, travelling west bound on Highway 17 approximately 25km east of Marathon. Police attempted to conduct a traffic stop but the vehicle failed to stop for Police and increased in speed. Police terminated any pursuit of the vehicle due to public safety concerns. The vehicle was later observed driving at a high rate of speed on Highway 627 south of Pic River First Nation. Police attempted to stop the vehicle with the use of a Tire Deflation Device (TDD). The driver swerved to avoid the TDD but lost control of the vehicle leaving the paved portion of the roadway coming to rest in the ditch.
A male and female were removed from the vehicle and placed under arrest. They were both transported to a local hospital and treated for minor injuries, and are now in police custody awaiting a court date to answer to the following charges.
The male, Leonard J. WOOD, age 24, from Chatham, ON. was charged with:
- Theft under $5000
- Possession Property Obtained by Crime over $5000
- Flight while Pursued by Peace Officer
- Dangerous Operation of Motor Vehicle
- Fail to Comply with Probation Order
The female, Kaitlyn R. BOWEN, age 18, from Blenheim, ON. was charged with:
- Possession Property Obtained by Crime over $5000
- Fail to Comply with Probation Order
