STOLEN VEHICLE RECOVERED IN NIPIGON

oppcolourNIPIGON, ON – Early in the morning on March 28, 2014 officers of the Nipigon and Schreiber Detachments of the Ontario Provincial Police (OPP) received a report of theft of fuel from a business in the Town of Nipigon.  At approximately 8:25 a.m., members of the Schreiber Detachment located and attempted to stop the suspect vehicle, a Ford pickup truck, at Hwy 17, east of Pays Plat First Nation.  The driver of the motor vehicle initially stopped and then continued eastbound at a high rate of speed.  A pursuit was initiated by police and then terminated a short time later.

The suspect vehicle was again located by police at approximately 8:45 a.m. east of Terrace Bay travelling eastbound.  With the assistance of members of the Marathon Detachment of the OPP, a spike belt was deployed at Hwy 17, Tuuri Township, and the motor vehicle was brought to a safe stop by police.

Police investigation revealed that the vehicle was stolen from a business in Thunder Bay, Ontario sometime during the previous night.

The 25 year old male driver of Thunder Bay, Ontario, Robert Gary Ray PEUHKURI, was arrested and has been charged with:

  • Flight While Pursued by Police,
  • Possession of Property Obtained by Crime Over $5000,
  • Theft Under $5000,
  • Dangerous Operation of a Motor Vehicle,
  • Fail to Comply with a Recognizance,

contrary to the Criminal Code. 
The 17 year old male passenger of Thunder Bay, Ontario was arrested and has been charged with:

  • Theft Under $5000 and Possession of Property Obtained by Crime Over $5000 contrary to the Criminal Code.  
  • Failing to Comply with a Probation Order contrary to the Youth Criminal Justice Act

The two males remain in custody and are to appear in court for a bail hearing on Saturday March 29, 2014.
