This week in Queen’s Park the NDP announced their plan to create jobs for families in Ontario through a targeted tax credit that rewards job creators for new hires.
This tax credit will help small businesses that are creating jobs here Algoma-Manitoulin and northern Ontario not the ones shipping our jobs overseas. Too many people in Northern Ontario are losing hope of finding a good job and instead of offering change; the government insists the same-old plan is working. My colleagues and I know we can do better.
The Job Creation Tax Credit would reimburse employers for 10 per cent of the salary paid to a new hire during their first year of employment, up to a maximum of $5,000 per new hire. Businesses would have to demonstrate that a new hire is genuine, and provide on-the-job training.
We have been facing a downturn in the primary job sectors in northern Ontario causing a jobs crisis for many communities. We need action throughout Algoma-Manitoulin and northern Ontario. This is one simple achievable step we could take now to get people working: create a job, get a tax credit.
Last week was constituency week and I spoke with many families across the riding and I continue to hear similar concerns; families feel like they’re being squeezed out of the middle class. Ontario’s unemployment continues to be above the national average and it’s clear that the Liberal status quo isn’t working. New Democrats are putting forward a proven plan to reward job creators. It’s a simple plan: create a job, get a tax credit; invest in workers, get a tax credit; invest in infrastructure, get a tax credit.
The Liberals and Conservatives both plan for more no-strings attached giveaways that we know aren’t creating jobs.
New Democrats have already stated that small businesses also need tax relief and a practical plan for increased minimum wage. We also need to get hydro bills under control. Families and small businesses are being suffocated by the cost of hydro. We have highlighted our plan in past articles on how we will save on hydro and put the money back in the pockets of Ontarians.
Ontarians want to see action now, not just promises when there is a possible election. I will continue to speak to constituents and want to hear more from you on possible ways we can make life more affordable.
As always, please feel free to contact my office about this issue or any other provincial matters. You can reach my constituency office by email at mmantha-co@ndp.on.ca or by phone at 705-461-9710/1-800-831-1899.
