nbl1NIPIGON, ON – Nipigon youth ages 3 – 16 are invited to register for Box Lacrosse before the end of the month (late-April registration closing).  Volunteers are also needed to help with timekeeping, coordinating referees, game statistics, player ranking, coaching, refereeing, etc.

What is Box Lacrosse? The Object of the game is to use lacrosse sticks (long handled racket) to catch carry and pass a solid rubber ball in an effort to hurl (shoot) a goal into the opposing teams net. It is played on a standard hockey “surface” (without ice). Many of the skills, rules and regulations have direct parallels to Ice Hockey making it a great off-season option for hockey players wanting to stay fit and active. Equipment used is also the nearly identical to that of ice-hockey, including a helmet/cage, mouth guard, arm/shoulder pads, back/kidney pads – no need to buy additional gear for those who already have this equipment in their hockey bag.

nbl2Other interesting details of Box Lacrosse:

  • A Team consists of 6 players (5 “runners” and one Goalie). A runner can be a defender, forward or transition player.
  • A typical game is comprised of three 20 minute periods with team changing ends each period.
  • After each goal or goal scored a face off takes place.
  • Penalties are similar in nature to hockey – with 2 minute minors and more time for major infractions.
