Groomer Guy’s Tales from the Trails – Cold January Nights

Cold nights grooming.

It’s a cold once again this morning, -40C without the wind-chill, with wind-chill factor it was -46C  Danny our Groomer Operator was out last night in this cold, My plans was not to have him that late out as he had left in around 8:30am in the morning and ended up getting back in town around 1:45am   He groomed up to the kaby river (D108A) and then headed on the 100 miles loop to finish filling in the big washout. he then back tracked and made it back to town.
Checking the thermometer at 5:15am before heading to work.

The picture at left is of the groomer all frozen, iced up from a long day and night on the trails; to see more from the same morning visit the Groomer Guy’s Blog. It looks cold just seeing it, the conditions these machine have to work in without breaking down – incredible!  Danny, on his own, groomed over 160 kms last night, in -30C  to – 40C,  through deep powder snow in some areas out in the middle of nowhere.

On the photo to the right, look at the amount of snow that has pilled up on the drag! This would be worse if the drive did not push it off every time he stopped to do a check up and walk-around; when stopping, we try to remove as much snow as we can because the snow adds a lot of weight to the groomer and slows it down, as well as blocking the driver’s view of the drag.

Danny had to limp the groomer back to town as he got a flat tire, lucky for him he made it to a plowed road, not far north of town and was able to drive it slowly back to the garage. The tire was already in bad shape and was going to be changed this week, the groomer is now in the shop thawing out.

Can’t get enough of the Groomer Guy?
