Tyler’s Take on this Week’s Releases
Whenever Oprah Winfrey attaches her name to any movie project, you know it’s going to be big. Oprah co-stars in this week’s headline new release “The Butler”, along with a star studded cast in a movie about a man who served the White House for eight presidential terms. Forrest Whitaker, Joan Fonda, Robin Williams and John Cusack are other notable stars in this movie full of historical significance. It’s a busy week for new releases, with twelve in total and plenty of quality titles to choose from. Be sure to enjoy this week’s movies as there are real gems to be found! Here is a brief synopsis of each title;

The Butler: starring Forest Whitaker and Oprah Winfrey – The true story of Cecil Gaines, a butler who served eight different Presidents at the White House during Vietnam, the civil rights movement and other major historical events. Riddick: starring Vin Diesel – After being left for dead on a new planet, Riddick finds himself up against an alien race of predators. Carrie: starring Chloe Grace–Moretz and Julianne Moore – A remake of the Stephen King classic about a shy girl who is ridiculed and outcast by her peers while being raised by her fanatical Mother. Enough Said: starring Julia Louis -Dreyfus and James Gandolfini- A divorced woman who decides to pursue the man she’s interested in learns he’s her new friend’s ex-husband. (Drama/Comedy) (DVD) Also available to rent at 2 Doors Down in Manitouwadge!
You’re Next: starring Sharni Vinson – When a family comes under attack during their wedding anniversary getaway, the gang of killers soon find out that one of victims has a secret talent for fighting back. (Horror) (DVD and Blu-Ray) Also available to rent at 2 Doors Down in Manitouwadge!
A.C.O.D: starring Adam Scott, Jessica Alba and Amy Poehler – A man who continuously finds himself stuck in the middle of his parents 15 year divorce, learns that he was once the subject of a study on divorced children. (Comedy) (DVD) Also available to rent at 2 Doors Down in Manitouwadge!
Blue Caprice: starring Isaiah Washington – An abandoned boy is lured to America and drawn into the shadow of a dangerous father figure. Inspired by the real life events that led to the DC sniper attacks. (Drama) (DVD)
Fruitvale Station: starring Michael B. Jordan and Octavia Spencer – The true story of a young man who is senselessly killed by police during an altercation at a subway station on New Year’s Eve, 2008. (Drama) (DVD)
Khumba– A half-striped zebra embarks on a quest to earn his stripes, but along the way he must find the courage and self-acceptance to save all the animals of the Great Karoo. (Kids) (DVD) Also available to rent at 2 Doors Down in Manitouwadge!
Parkland: starring Billy Bob Thornton, Zac Efron and Paul Giamatti – The true story of the chaotic events that occurred at Dallas’ Parkland Hospital on the day that U.S. President John F. Kennedy was assassinated. (Drama) (DVD)
A Single Shot: starring Sam Rockwell – The tragic death of a young girl sets into motion a game of cat and mouse between a hunter and the hardened backwater criminals out for his blood. (Crime/Thriller) (DVD)
Spectacular Now: starring Miles Teller and Shailene Woodley – A hard-partying high school senior’s philosophy on life changes after he meeting a not-so-typical “nice girl.” (Drama/Romance) (DVD) Also available to rent at 2 Doors Down in Manitouwadge!

GOLDEN GLOBES WRAP-UP
Hard to believe but it’s movie awards time again! In a few short weeks, the Academy Awards will be presented to the year’s best accomplishments in Hollywood. The Golden Globes is the other major award event, and usually a solid preview of some titles likely to garner Academy Award attention. The 2014 Golden Globes took place this past Sunday and several trophies were handed out.
Here is my list of some of the noteworthy winners;
- Best Actor in a Motion Picture, Drama – Matthew McConaughey for his role in Dallas Buyers Club (available on DVD February 4th)
- Best Actress in a Motion Picture, Drama – Cate Blanchett for her role in Blue Jasmine (available on DVD January 21st)
- Best Actor in a Motion Picture, Musical or Comedy – Leonardo DiCaprio for his role in The Wolf on Wall Street (DVD release date not yet available)
- Best Actress in a Motion Picture, Musical or Comedy – Amy Adams for her role in American Hustle (DVD release date not yet available)
