MANITOUWADGE, ON– Weather November 11th was far from ideal, cold winds and a significant amount of snow on the ground for the 2nd week of November. However frigid weather did not deter Manitouwadge residents from showing their respect and appreciation of those who have served our country to protect our rights and freedoms as more people participated in the parade and ceremony than in other recent years.

Led by Legion Branch 242 President Ron Sheppard and a colour party including legionnaires, OPP, and Manitouwadge’s lone-Brownie, the annual Remembrance Day parade saw students from the 4 local schools accompanied by staff, parents and other volunteers begin their march from KG’s Bar & Lounge. The parade was led to the Cenotaph where it stopped briefly as Sheppard placed the first wreath before continuing through the traffic circle and up to the Recreation Centre where attendees would participate in the Remembrance Day ceremony.

In the auditorium, the large number of participating residents was even more evident. President Ron Sheppard explained that the wreath sales also reflected an increase in Remembrance Day participation in Manitouwadge for 2013. 2 Minutes of silence, a beautiful prayer offered by Legion padre, Reverend Doreen Sproule, messages from the Prime Minister and other traditional elements of the ceremony were appreciated by all in attendance. Students from each of the schools assisted with placing wreaths for those businesses and organizations not personally doing so. President Ron Sheppard wrapped up the ceremony by thanking everyone in attendance and inviting them to return to KG’s where coffee and deserts would be available to enjoy courtesy of Royal Canadian Legion Branch 242.
