TERRACE BAY, ON – The school year is well underway now, and with it comes a host of new learning opportunities for students. Among these new opportunities, is a chance to learn about entrepreneurship and business being provided by Superior North Community Futures Development Corporation (SNCFDC) and the Northern Ontario Youth Entrepreneurship Initiative. Youth Entrepreneurship Coordinator Travis McArthur [see links below article for more on McArthur] will soon be travelling to schools between Dorion and Manitouwadge to introduce youth, Grade 3 and up, to the world of entrepreneurship.

Entrepreneurship presents an exciting career option for youth for two main reasons. The first is that it provides youth with the opportunity to be their own boss, and to create a project in their own way. The second is that it allows youth to work within their interests, skills, and passions. Entrepreneurial opportunities can be found everywhere; does your child like video games, sports, animals, insects, fishing, hiking, dressing up, or even sleeping in? Guess what, any of these different interests could spark a small business idea!

Two workshops, Create a Logo and Market Your Thoughts, are designed to give elementary school students a fun and interactive introduction to entrepreneurship. Create a Logo is aimed at Grades 3 to 6, focusing on the importance of logos and business names. Meanwhile, Market Your Thoughts is aimed at Grade 7 and 8 students, focusing on idea generation in the context of business. Both workshops include a discussion on local businesses, business opportunities in the region, and businesses around the world. They have a presentation component as well as a competition component where kids can win cash prizes; look for them coming to your child’s school!

At the secondary school level, the Generation E workshop promotes entrepreneurship as a career choice, and provides activities which get students thinking about different entrepreneurial opportunities. Through short stories about famous entrepreneurs, students will come to understand that entrepreneurs got to where they are today not by being the smartest people in the world, or by being the most well-connected; they did so by following an idea or a passion, working hard, and not taking no for an answer. This workshop discusses resources available to students who wish to start a business or would like more information on the process.

The two goals of these programs are to create an entrepreneurial culture within youth in our region, and to prove that entrepreneurship is a viable career option in Northern Ontario. These programs are in place all across Northern Ontario through the Northern Ontario Youth Entrepreneurship Initiative (NOYEI) – www.HeadStartInBusiness.com, and Travis looks forward to sharing the entrepreneurial spirit with youth in the area.
