HUGHES LAUDS COMMUNITY LIVING ASSOCIATIONS IN PARLIAMENT

OTTAWA, ON – Community Living Associations remind us about the good that is being done in Canada on a local level says Algoma-Manitoulin-Kapuskasing, MP, Carol Hughes.
The MP praised these non-profit associations in the House of Commons Tuesday, for the work they undertake helping people with intellectual disabilities take part in all aspects of their communities.
“The Canadian Association for Community Living along with regional and local partners work towards a Canada where all persons live in a state of dignity, with the opportunity to participate and share in all elements of life in their communities.,” said Hughes.
The MP said that the organizations work to advance human rights and equality while battling preconceptions and discrimination.
“In places like Hearst, Kapuskasing, Chapleau, Manitoulin Island, Elliot Lake, and Espanola, Community Living is making its mark while striving to end exclusion and discrimination,” Said Hughes.
Hughes related an experience that showed how working to include individuals is an investment in stronger, more compassionate communities.
“Recently, I was privileged to participate in Community Living Manitoulin’s inspirational Annual Harvest Ball awards ceremony where special recognition for individual achievement was given to Howard Panamick, for charting a new direction in his life and to Roger Howard, who was promoted to Manager at the Everything-Under-the-Sun thrift store.”
