FATAL COLLISION SHUTS DOWN HWY 11 WEST OF HEARST
HEARST, ON – Shortly after 1:00 a.m. on Tuesday, October 22, 2013, officers of the Ontario Provincial Police (OPP) Hearst Detachment responded to a fatal collision involving a Chrysler 300 passenger vehicle and a pickup truck on Highway 11, approximately 90 kilometers west of Hearst.
Responding officers attended the scene and shut down Hwy 11 while Emergency Medical Services (EMS) rendered medical assistance to three of the involved occupants.
Both drivers were transported to the Hearst hospital by ambulance for further medical assessment and were later released from hospital. The male passenger of the Chrysler 300 vehicle succumbed to his injuries.
Police investigation revealed that the Chrysler 300 passenger vehicle, occupied by two 31 year old males from Ottawa, was traveling westbound along Hwy 11 when it lost control, crossed the centre line and struck the oncoming eastbound pickup truck operated by a 44 year old Sudbury man.
During the investigation, one kilogram of cocaine, estimated at a street value of $100 000 was located by police in the damaged Chrysler 300 vehicle. As a result of the findings, the driver of the Chrysler 300 was arrested and charged with one count of Possession for the purpose of trafficking and one count of Trafficking, contrary to the Controlled Drugs Substance Act (CDSA) of the Criminal Code of Canada.
The accused male is in police custody awaiting a bail hearing scheduled for Wednesday, October 23, 2013 at the Ontario Court of Justice in Cochrane.
Members with the OPP Technical Traffic Collision Investigation (TTCI) are currently investigating the cause of the collision and further charges are pending completion of the investigation.
Names of the involved parties are being withheld pending notification of next of kin.
