Fire Call to Manitouwadge Home & Safety From Fire Chief Owen Cranney
MANITOUWADGE, ON – September 19, 2013 the Manitouwadge Volunteer Fire Department provided fire suppression at a home on Caribou Drive. The owners were at home at the time though, thankfully, no one was hurt. Fire Chief Owen Cranney explained that the homeowners had been burning debris which caused their woodstove to overheat.
The Fire Chief took the opportunity to remind everyone that only clean, dry wood should be burned in woodstoves not paper, debris, gift wrap or any other kind of debris (including pizza or other food boxes which can include ink, glue and other toxins which means the fire actually becomes a chemical fire which can be dangerous for a myriad of reasons – fumes, overheating, etc).
Cranney also reminds everyone that if you have a wood stove, pellet stove propane appliance, or oil burner furnace of any kind their should also be a carbon monoxide detector/alarm in the home and that he welcomes calls or emails if there are any questions beyond the information he provides in the video below. Most fire departments are happy to provide answers to fire safety and prevention questions, see below for a listing of area fire chiefs and their contact info.
